Toponymy

The Teurthéville-Scrap-metal name is very old, it probably comes from the name of the Norman knight Thorketill which took possession of this territory (villa) with Xe century, that is to say: the field of Thortketill. This name evolved/moved during the centuries, one wrote in 1182 Torquetevilla: this form Tor- remained used until the beginning of the XVIIe century, and will disappear slowly for the form current: Teur- . In 1600, one wrote Turquetheville, then by abbreviation that became Turtheville in 1640 and since 1790 Teurthéville. It is as since the Revolution as the word scrap-metal was added to him because of the landscape. Teurthéville is still called in the country, in language Norman: Tourtaville.
