Teufelsberg
Teufelsberg (German: Montagne of the Devil ) is a hill of Berlin, Germany, in old the West Berlin. It is 80 meters top and is in the north of the forest (Grünewald) of the city.
It is an artificial hill with a history out of the commun run: it was set up by the Alliés after the Second world war with rubble of Berlin during the twenty years of rebuilding of the city. An estimate of the sum of rubble used is of 12 000 000 m ³, are approximately 400 000 buildings.
The origins of Teufelsberg do not make it single, considering there are many similar hills of rubble in Germany and in the other cities affected by the War in Europe. What distinguishes it from the others is what is buried below: a university Nazi military and technical conceived by Albert Speer. The Allies tried to use explosives to destroy the school, but it was so strongly built that to cover it remains were easier.
In the years 1960 a small center of ski was built on the slopes of the hill.
The history of the hill becomes even more mysterious: American NSA built one of its largest stations on the top of the hill, it was considered to belong to the world network LEVEL of espionage. At the request of the US government, the Télésiège S were removed because they disturbed the signals. The station continued its operations until the fall of GDR and the Berlin Wall, but after that the station was closed and the removed material. The buildings and the domes of Radar remain still there.
During the operations of the NSA of other odd things happened: it was noticed that at certain times of the year the reception of signals radio was better. The reason was found later: it was the Grande wheel annual German-American festival on the Hüttenweg with Zehlendorf. After this discovery, the large wheel was left on the spot after the end of the festival. There were also rumors according to which the Americans would have dug a tunnel in the ruins, but without proof. It was probably about a tunnel of urgencies.
In the years 1990, whereas Berlin had undergone an economic growth after the German Réunification, a group of investors bought the hill at the city and started to build hotels and buildings above, and envisaged to keep the station of the NSA to make a Musée of it espionage. However, the Teufelsberg project failed, and of the beginning of the year the 2000 city thought of repurchasing the hill. Unfortunately, it appears that the site was victim of Vandalisme since the abandonment of the project.
