Tessalit

Tessalit is a city of north east of the Mali which counts approximately 9.800 inhabitants, place chief of circle in the area of Kidal. The population of the circle of Tessalit is estimated at 23.700 inhabitants, and is primarily made up of Touaregs.

Geography

Tessalit, is located at the north of the Massif of Tighaghar, in the Adrar of Ifoghas. Coordinates:

Economy

Tessalit is beautiful a Oasis; formerly thrives, it profited from the Trans-Saharan tourist passage, between the south of the Algérie and the Mali. A layer of Gypsum, as well as a factory of Plâtre also contributed to its rise.

These two elements of resource, as well as the tourist activity were destroyed by the movements related to the Rébellion touarègue in the years 1990, like by the terrorist activities in Algérie, of the end of the 20th century.

So, to be ready with the tourist renewal of activity, the commune of Tessalit obtained a Camping of good quality. Tessalit, has only the Aérodrome of the area with a track into hard, being able to accommodate large transport aircrafts; it is deprived of a Aérogare; it is used for rare military flights and private civilians. In December 2005, it was set up a Banque of cereals, in order to consolidate the food safety of the local populations.

The circle of Tessalit gathers three communes divided into two sectors: TESSALIT, AGHEL' HOC and TIMETRIN (To Mali a circle corresponds to a department, a sector corresponds to a district):

  • Sector of Tessalit: Tessalit, Terist, Abanco, Taghlit, Tadjnut, Telakak, Ubankort, Awil, Tadjodjamet, In Khalil.
  • Sector of Aguel' hoc: Aguel' hoc, Tassidjimt, Ukinik, Telabit, Inakafel, Tamuscat, Matalmen, Tagharabat, Soran, Laway laway, Aslagh, Inamzil.

The group Tinariwen, initiator and leader of the musical current, the Tuareg Blues is originating in Tessalit, as well as the contemporary poet Mali in Souéloum Diagho.
