The French explorer Jean Nicolet is the first which one has a written trâce of his stay in 1634. French will yield the territory to the British by the Traité of Paris (1763) which put a term at the Guerre Seven Year old in America.

Although having to face an armed uprising on behalf of the Indian , carried out inter alia by the chief Pontiac, the British publish the Proclamation of 1763 who prohibits to the colonists to be established in the west of the the Appalachian Mountains, in order to alleviate the natives. But this measurement is badly seen colonists who want to extend their territory and it is one of the factors which will contribute to the Guerre of independence of the United States of America.

The British yield, in the United States, the part located at north of the river Ohio and in the west of the Appalachian Mountains at the end of the War of independence at the time of the Traité of Paris (1783) but they will maintain a presence there for many years.

The States of Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut had all of the claims on this territory. In order to obtain the ratification, the states conceded these territories with the US government: New York in 1780, Virginia in 1784, Massachusetts and Connecticut in 1785.
