Terrariophilie

The terrariophilie is a passion which consists in maintaining, to even make reproduce certain species Animal are and/or vegetable by imitating to them biotope in confined surroundings, the Terrarium. It presents great similarities with this other passion which is the Aquariophilie.

Etymology

Terrariophilie comes us from the word “ Terrarium ” (an aquarium whose water is replaced by ground) and “ phile ” of the Greek “which likes”.

A little history

The history of the terrariophilie is extremely badly known. One really does not know when it began, but one can advance prudently by saying that this passion was born with the the United States there is approximately about thirty year.

However, already in antiquity, certain people held and raised cricket S whose song of the males liked much. To the Middle Ages, they were even carried around the neck into pendentive in small silver boxes!

(S) the boarder (S)

It is quite obvious that all cannot live in terrarium. Principal boarders of the terrariums sont :
  • the Reptile S,

  • the Arthropod S of which the crustacean Insect S and terrestrial for example
  • the Amphibian S,
  • the Mollusc S,
  • the Plant S exotics.

One indicates these animals under the initials of NAC (New Pets), in opposition to the pet , which are of more common species and often domesticated.

It should be noted that the animals which one meets in terrariophilie are seldom familiar animals, having a close contact with the stockbreeder. This comes owing to the fact that  :

  • these animals cannot generally live a long time apart from their terrarium  ;
  • these animals do not have or little affinity with the hommes  ;
  • some represent a danger (poisonous animals)   ;
  • their size reduced (in general) can lead to escapes.
