Terrace of the leprous King

The Terrasse of the leprous King is located at the north of the Terrasse of the elephants in the old town of Angkor Thom on the site of Angkor to the Kampuchea.

The two terraces were established at the end of the 12th century by Jayavarman VII and border in the East the old Royal palace making it possible to dominate the great central place of Angkor Thom.

Its sandstone frontage of approximately 25 m of dimensioned and 6 m in height forming a " coarsely; U" is entirely decorated very worked low-reliefs representing the Pantheon hindouist of which omnipresent the nāga S, garuḍa S and Kumbhandá S.

Each line represents a world. Thus the lower line evokes the marine world.

Work of restoration, carried out by the EFEO (French School of the Far East) under the direction of Christophe Pottier began again since 1992 by using the technique of the Anastylose. They moreover allowed the setting the day of another wall decorated, two meters behind the first and to release a corridor making it possible to appreciate its decoration quite as abundant. One finds there inter alia an originality, a horse with five heads. The reason of this juxtaposition remains mysterious; perhaps a symbolic system related to the Mount Meru?

One of the assumptions on the use of this terrace is that it was a men , place of incineration of the kings. This statue which gave its name to the terrace, probably represents Yama, the god hindouist of Mort or one of these assistants, the Inspecteur of qualities and the faults . To avoid the flights it is preserved at the National museum of Phnom Penh.
