Terminating
The terminating is a concept that one finds in Astronomie and in particular in connection with the the Moon. It is about the zone separating the hemisphere plunged in the darkness from that enlightened (in general by the Sun).
The terminating lunar one, observed for the first time at the glasses by Galileo, represents the zone most interesting of the the Moon to be observed. Because of the weak rise in the Sun, the reliefs located in this area are enlightened in low-angled light and see their accentuated profiles, delimited well by their shades thanks to the absence of diffusion by an atmosphere.
The factor of longitudinal brightness which represents the ideal angle of rise in the Sun above the reliefs locates between 5° and 15° approximately, which gets the maximum of contrast because of the shadows.
This strong contrast between the clear and obscure areas extends towards the east (the increasing Moon) or towards the west (the downward Moon) on a distance of approximately 600 km is 12° of Colongitude. Beyond these values the Sun is with more 20° above the horizon and the formation loses all its relief, excluded the very recent crater S with the high rampart S whose bottom is visible only once the rather high Sun on the horizon.
