Teresina (Piauí)
Teresina is a city Brésil ienne, capital of the State of Piaui.
It is the single capital of the Nordeste not to be located on the Littoral. The city is between the Rio Parnaíba and the Rio Poti, its affluent. Built at the border of the State de Maranhão, on Right Bank of the Rio Parnaíba, it is flanked in the west, on the side of the Maranhão, by the town of Timon.
The town of Teresina had a population of 813.992 inhabitants in 2006 and its metropolitan surface exceeded on this date the million inhabitants.
She is regarded in Brazil as a medical center of reference in the area of Nordeste. Indeed it has not less than 634 health care institutions, including 8 hospital and 181 medical private clinics, the whole employing fifteen thousand people.
History
The city was founded in 1832 under the name of Vila Nova C Poti . In 1852 it was selected to become capital province of Piauí in the place of the town of Oeiras (at the time of the Empire of Brazil, the country was divided into provinces). It was then renamed under the name of Teresina in homage to the empress Teresa Cristina de Bourbon, marries of the emperor Dom Pedro II. Teresina was the first Brazilian city with being planned, in the sense that an architect drew the plans (1852) of them. So that it is known like the " city verte" thanks to the innumerable trees (Manguier S) which border its streets.
