Terceira

The island of Terceira belongs to the Archipel the Azores located in the Atlantic Ocean Northern at 1.400 km of Lisbon. The archipelago is a department of the Portugal to autonomous statute since 1976.

It is located in the power station group, its nearer close is the island of São Jorge, and owes its name with the fact of having been the third to be discovered (towards 1450).

History

Praia da Vitoria is the second town of Terceira with 20 200 inhabitants it is located at the north of the island close to Lajes which shelters important a American air base.

The island is connected to the rest of the world like in the other islands of the archipelago by the Aéroport of Lajes divided with the soldiers like by two ports in the two principal cities.

The economic activity of the island east ensured by the soldiers, the Agriculture, the fishing like by the services and the Tourism.

The port of Lajes was very implied in the Chasse for the whale until in 1984.

In 1980 a Earthquake damaged Angra C Heroísmo causing 71 victims.
