The town of Columbus is the capital of the State of the Ohio, with the the United States, the junction of the rivers Scioto and Olentangy. It is the most important city of Ohio with a population of: 730657 inhabitants (according to the estimates of 2005). It is estimated that its agglomeration comprises: 1708625 inhabitants, which places it behind Cleveland and Cincinnati, both plus big cities of the State.
The Université of the State of Ohio, whose principal campus is located at Columbus, is the first campus of the United States by the number of students (with 52.568).
The city has a surface of 550,5 km ² (of which 5,9 km ² of water).
History
In 1812, the authorities of Éat, in the search of a site located well likely to become the capital of Ohio, choose a point on the Scioto river. The birth of Columbus does not involve a conflict with the Amerindians Wyandotte and Shawnee installed in the area, and the city develops quickly. It is transformed into an important center of transport after the construction of a channel to the Érié channel in 1831 and with the creation of a trunk road in 1833.
