Geography
Exceptional territory of mountain and high mountain, the immense East-West rectangular territory is cut in its North-South medium by the high valley of the Roya which receives in Tende its affluent, the Réfréi.The Italian border limit north and is commune by a line of high tops (more than twenty tops exceeding 2 000 meters, culminating with the summits of Agnel, 2 852 meters, with the breach of the Col of Tightens with 1 871 meters).
The Western part of the valley of Roya is practically occupied by the unit known as of the “ Valley of the Wonders ” and of the solid mass of the Mount Bégo (see hereafter).
In the east, the rock solid masses decrease of the Italian peaks (more 2 000 meters) with the valley (approximately 1 000 meters). One can admire there splendid forests of Mélèze S (established).
It is impossible to describe by simple words the sites and the panoramas of this vast territory, as well as the excursions and climbings which it allows: the unit is often exceptional, always remarkable.
History
Cité au 11th century under its current term, Tende concerned the county of Vintimille. In 1261, Pierre-Guillaume de Vintimille, lord of Tightens, married the sister of the young Greek emperor of the East, Jean Lascaris, and took the name of Vintimille-Lascaris. In 1581, the county of Tends was acquired by the Maison of Savoy. In 1860, the commune of Tends, as that of Aspires to It, was not included/understood in the territories conceded in France in the treated of Turin. It is with the peace treaty of Paris of the February 10th 1947 that these territories pass under French sovereignty.
The commune of Tends is vastest of the department.
Since 1967, professor Henry de Lumley and his teams take readings and mouldings of the rocks engraved since prehistory on the natural sites of the Vallée of the Wonders and the valley of Fontanalbe (mouldings exposed to the departmental Museum of the Wonders to Tends).
