Tence

Tence ( Tença in Occitan) is a common French, located at the east of the Vivarais, in the department of the Haute-Loire and the area Auvergne.

Tence belongs to the Communauté of Communes of Haut-Lignon, with the communes of: Chenereilles, Farmhouse-with-Tence, It Chambon-on-Lignon, Mazet-St-Voy, and St-Jeures.

Geography

Tence is a commune of the north of the Vivarais, famous for its Rivière S with Truite S: the Lignon, the Sérigoule (or Cérigoule) and the brook of Mazeaux.

History

Tence is a borough surrounded by fortifications in order to resist, during the Moyen-Âge, the attacks of the plunderers and the brigands. Later, they will also be useful during the wars of religion. It does not remain much any more of vestiges of these walls except some walls (see further) .

Two periods strongly struck the village tençoise: the wars of religion and the Revolution of 1789.

The arrival of the train in 1901 was also an event which unfortunately increased the Rural migration for the benefit of Saint-Etienne. (Video of the small train)

The origin of its name is not certain but there exists an assumption: it would come from the Latin word Tencianensis , him even derived from the word group Tenti Loci which means " inhabited places dispersés".

Armorial bearings and currency

The armorial bearings of Tence go back only to 1912. They are the reward of a painful past, fruit of the civil wars and heroic memories.

The blazon is divided into two parts:

  • a half made up of the weapons of Jean de Naturelli, originating in Burgundy, Benedictine and prior of Tence in 1510, which made build the chorus of the church.
  • other half is composed by the weapons of the Languedoc, Comté of Toulouse, on which Tence depended until the Revolution.

The weapons are surmounted by a mural crown to recall that the city was strengthened.

The currency seems pretentious but, when it is about a community, the claim can seem to be a quality:

Alta sicut go up twisted
what wants to say: In this country, the hearts are as high as the mountains .

Places and monuments

There exist two types of monuments on the communes of Tence and in its surroundings:

Religious monuments

Most typical of the religious monuments is, as in many villages, a church, or more particularly a Chapelle. It is called the Vault of Penitent and is at the top of the place of Chatiague. It was built in 1719 by the laic Brotherhood of Penitent of the Blessed Sacrament. This vault was the starting point for the processions of the Thursday-Saint and the Corpus Christi. The round-off of this vault is surely the remainder of a tower which protected the borough with the Moyen-Âge.

There exists another vault, the Notre-Dame vault, built in 1891 to replace an old vault of 1738 which threatened to crumble. She is dedicated to Notre Dame of the Perpetual-Help.

The third religious building is a church of which banal architecture does not deserve much attention. However, it should be specified that the bell-tower is decorated astonishing low-reliefs, and that it releases a superb sight on all the commune.

There exists also a Temple, built in 1888, whose only characteristic is the inscription engraved on the bell: If you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts . The old temple was located way of Meyre (site of the ditches?).

Historic buildings

Those are of recent nature. Indeed, the second industrial revolution and the world war are at the origin of these monuments or rather of these places which point out to us the tradition of reception of the plate vivarois. In the hamlet of Mounas is located what is the Small Paper mill today, a lodging for the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle. But this masonry of good size was formerly a colony of the Work of the Children to the Mountain of Pasteur Louis Count, and who accommodated children during the war.

It is also necessary to see the Sevaistre house, the round-off of the vault of penitent and the way of Meyre to realize of the organization of Tence to the Middle Ages.

Moreover, it is advisable to raise the presence of many " charreyrons ", small lanes serving the Tence old man, in the loop of the street of the barracks, between Sérigoule (or Cérigoule) and the street of repurchase, but also parallel to the " grand' rue". Moreover, the inheritance tençois is rich old stones, farms typical with the roofs of roofing stone and old castles (Château of the Brush and Château of Besset), some crosses dispersed in the countryside, with the crossroads of the ways or the turning of one feel… But also of pretty places recently arranged and development: that of Chatiague, at the end of which the War memorial the was moved, but also that of the town hall.
