A ten-line stanza (or dixain ) is a Strophe or a Poème of ten towards.
In French poetry, this form was often used at the 15th century and the 16th century, in particular by Maurice Scève in his Délie (1544), consisted of 449 ten-line stanzas. The ten-line stanzas of Scève were composed of two Quintil S leading to the form ababb/ccdcd.
The poet Joachim of Bellay published a ten-line stanza in 1547 under the title " At the city of Mans". The ten-line stanza as poem forms was then forsaken until François Coppée takes again it, by using rhymes punts, in particular in the section Promenades and Intérieur of the Humbles (1872), where one finds tables of the life of modest people. These poems more or less gave to place in their turn with pastiches mockers on behalf of the zutists (Verlaine, Rimbaud) and of the authors of the realistic collection Dixains in 1876: Nina de Villard, Charles Cros, Jean Richepin, Antoine Cros, Maurice Rollinat, German New, Auguste de Châtillon, Hector Estraz, Charles Frémine.
