The temporal lobe is an area of the Cerveau Vertébré S located behind the temporal Os of the Tempe S, in the side and lower part of the brain. It is an important zone for many functions Cognitives, of which in particular the Audition, the Langage and the memory.

Anatomy

The temporal lobes are located at the back of the frontal lobes and at the lower part of the parietal lobes. The side Sillon (old fissure of Sylvius ) constitutes the border of it. Behind temporal lobe is the occipital Lobe where the visual informations come from to the cortex. One includes in the temporal lobe of the underlying structures, the hippocampus and the amygdala.

Function

The temporal lobe is subdivided in several areas with the distinct functions.

The higher temporal Gyrus comprises an area (the primary education auditive cortex), inside the side furrow, where auditive information comes from to the cortex after several relays Sous-corticaux.

The close areas in the parts higher, posterior and side of the temporal lobes are implied in the high level auditive treatments. At the human being, that includes the Langage, for which the left temporal lobe, in particular, seems specialized. This function implies in a crucial way the Aire of Wernicke, located partly on the parietal lobe (in relation with the surface of Broca in the frontal lobe). The functions of the left temporal lobe at the human being are not simply perceptive but extend to comprehension, the denomination, the verbal memory and other functions related to the language. Certain areas of the temporal lobe also intervene in the treatment of auditive and visual stimuli (for example, to analyze at the same time the movements of the face and the voice of an interlocutor). They are known as Hétéromodal are.

The lower part (ventral) of the temporal cortex seems implied in the visual treatments high level relating to complex stimuli like the Reconnaissance of the faces (spindle-shaped Gyrus) and analyzes it complex visual scenes (Gyrus parahippocampic). The former parts of this area are implied in perception and the recognition of the objects.

The part of the temporal lobe located near the sagittal Plan separating both hemispheres constitutes the median temporal lobe. It is implied in the memory known as episodical or declaratory. Located in the middle of the median temporal lobe, the hippocampus plays a crucial role, in particular in the constitution of the memories and the space memory. The amygdala contributes to the treatment of the emotional aspects of the memory.
