The Temple of the People is regarded in the media as a Secte, mainly known for the Collective suicide of 914 of its followers, the November 18th 1978 with Jonestown, in Guyana (an American senator Leo Ryan, come to inquire into the sect, was also assassinated at the time of this tragedy). The Temple is founded in 1953, with Indianapolis (the United States), under the name Ailes of the delivery then Temple of the people in 1955 by the reverend Jim Jones. In 1960, the group adopts the Protestant confession of the Disciples of Christ.

In Indianapolis, like in the cities California of Ukiah, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, where Jones created new branches of his worship, the members of the sect gained a good reputation for the assistance which they brought to the poor, particularly with the racial minorities, the drug addicts and with the Without fixed residence.

The tragedy is described in documentary carried out in 2006 by Stanley Nelson, Jonestown: The Life and Death off Peoples Temple .
