Temple of Surawana
The temple of Surawana or Surowono is a small sanctuary of the time Majapahit located in the village of Canggu close to the city to Avoids in the kabupaten (department) of Kediri in the province of Java Is in Indonesia. It is thought that it was built in 1390 after J.C. like memorial with Wijayarajasa, prince de Wengker. To date, only the base of the temple was restored and a great quantity of bricks wait close to the structure to be positioned back.
History
Surawana “officially” completed only in 1400. Wijayarajasa was an uncle by alliance of king Rajasanagara and had a great influence on the king.The temple is of size modest, with a base of 7,80 m ² and height a 4,60 meters. The structure is directed towards the west, as the majority of the temples of Java East.
Surawana is decorated with low-reliefs on its circumference which illustrate accounts in connection with the direction to which they face.
One of most known of these accounts is the Arjunawiwaha or " marriage of Arjuna". One finds it in the decoration of some six different sites in Java East. This account is still very popular in Java and inspires the theater, the dance and painting. The history was made up in 1035 by Mpu Kanwa, a poet of Javanese court. It takes as a starting point a passage of the great Indian epopee of the Mahabharata, Kiratarjunya. This Javanese version was adapted to the character of the king Airlangga, who represents the perfect king.
