The temple of Mars Avenger ( Mars Latin Ultor in ) was at the origin of the Forum of Auguste, the first of the imperial Forums of Rome. Octave had promised to build this temple at the time of the Bataille of Philips (-42), where fell the assassins from his adoptive father Jules César. Work was completed only in -2. The whole of the building was out of marble of Carrare. The use of this material was recent in Rome and Auguste will be able to praise itself to have left out of marble a city which it had found built out of bricks. The frontage of the temple, as well as the sides, was composed of eight Corinthian columns . There remains about it only three side columns. The concealed probably sheltered three statues, those of Mars, Venus like that of César divinized (“divus Iulius”. The senate met in this temple to declare the war or to conclude a peace treaty. The trophies brought back by the victorious generals were preserved there. Ovide devotes to it some worms in the “Records”.
