A television channel is an organization which diffuses televised programs.
In the beginning, the expression “chains” refers to the whole of the transmitting which made it possible to transmit the same program simultaneously. Today, a television channel has as an essential activity the production and the diffusion of televised programs. One generally distinguishes three great trades related to this activity, which can be consequently assured company or entrusted to partners:
A television channel can play these three parts when it produces emissions or telefilms, that it diffuses them and that it ensures the technical management of its network.
The arrival of novel modes of diffusion as the cable, the satellite, ADSL and TNT gave rise to new chains and to the use of novel methods. Until the end of the years 1980, the televised transmissions were Analogique S (hertzian diffusion of continuous and modulated electrical signals). Since a few years, the recourse to technologies Numerical S.A. improved quality of the images recorded, transmitted and delivered.
In France, the television channels are subjected to a mode of authorization arbitrated by the Superior council of audio-visual the (SCUMS).
