The revolutionary Gouvernement of Zanzibar (in English Revolutionary Government off Zanzibar , in Kiswahili Jamhuri ya Watu wa Zanzibar ) is an administrative entity autonomous of the Tanzania which joins together five areas of Tanzania covering two of the three principal islands of the archipelago of Zanzibar  : Unguja and Pemba.

This entity at summer created in 1964 with the meeting of the two States independent of Zanzibar and of the Tanganyika which then formed current Tanzania. It covers the insular territory corresponding to old the sultanate of Zanzibar, the continental part of this sultanate having been attached to the protectorate of Tanganyika the December 10th 1963.

The third large island of the archipelago of Zanzibar, Maffia, forever made up a possession of the various political entities based in the remainder of the archipelago and after being attached to the protectorate of Tanganyika, it forms today part of the area of Pwani.

The capital of the revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Zanzibar City, located on Unguja is more the big city of the archipelago and is member of the Organization of the cities of the world heritage.

Formerly large producers of spice S and in particular of cloves, the Tourisme develops since the fall of the Socialisme and becomes the independent source of incomes.

Etymology

Colonists Perses would have perhaps left since Chiraz to be established in Zanzibar and the name would come from the Persan زنگبار Zangi-bar meaning the “coast of the coloured persons coppers” ( Zangi meaning copper ). However, some prefer the Arab origin Zayn Z' Al Barr .

History

Policy

Although attached to the Tanzania, Zanzibar profits from some political autonomy but depends completely on the Tanzanian capacity in connection with the economic questions, financial, legal, of foreign politics and maintenance of peace abroad and in the archipelago.

The entity appoints its own president placed at the head of a local government in charge of the regional businesses. The room of the representatives is known under the name of Baraza Wawakilishi
