Telerin

The telerin or lindárin is one of the built Langues imagined by the novelist and Philologue J.R.R. Tolkien. In the universe of fiction in which proceed the accounts of the Ground of the Medium, it is the language of the elves Teleri established in Aman, the Falmari. Very near to the Quenya, the language of the Vanyar and the Ñoldor, the other clans of elves of Aman, it however presented old affinities with the Sindarin, the language of the Gray Elfes of the Beleriand.

External history

The idea of an idiom specific to the third clan of the Elves, near but distinct from the quenya, goes up with creation even this one, about 1915. It was then allotted to the Solosimpi , the narrative precursors of Falmari to come. Forms find of it throughout the life of Tolkien in its writings on its imaginary Monde, but the language never appears however to have been the subject of an independent development, being usually discussed in comparison with the quenya and the sindarin. At the beginning, the telerin hardly appears to have been more than one very particularized alternative of the quenya; it is only starting from end of the year 50 that Tolkien developed the designs more in detail of them.

Internal history

Like the quenya and the sindarin of Aman, the telerin descends from the common eldarin , the language of the Eldar during their great walk of Cuiviénen towards Valinor, him even derived from the primitive quendien , the paramount language invented by the first Elves with Cuiviénen. Common features of old origin divided by the sindarin and the telerin show that the common eldarin was not entirely homogeneous and that the speech of the Teleri had acquired certain characteristics, making it possible to define a common telerin . The telerin of Aman comes from her evolution in the use of Falmari, initially in insulation as long as they remained on the island of Tol Eressëa, then after their establishment in Eldamar in contact with the dialect quenya of Ñoldor, with which there was mutual influence.

In spite of notable differences, some dating from the common eldarin, some developed at the time of the period on Tol Eresseä, the telerin remained very close to the Quenya, enough so that there is Intercompréhension between the two. Historically besides, the term of quenya covered also the language of Teleri, regarded as a dialect; but it was not the case in the everyday usage. Teleri called their language Lindārin or saw Lindalambe (“language of Lindar”, according to their old name of clan) and it as distinct from the quenya that they called Goldōrin or Goldolambe (“language of Ñoldor”, because they had few contacts with Vanyar).

The telerin thus seems “medium term” between the quenya and the sindarin, reflection on the one hand of the old relationship of Teleri of Aman with Sindar, on the other hand of their durable association with Vanyar and Ñoldor as Aman.

Differences with the quenya

The telerin has many divergences Phonétique S with the quenya. For example:

  • qu of the quenya becomes p in telerin, a common change telerin also observed in sindarin;
  • the quenya does not use the consonants B , D , G that in the groups mb, lb, Nd, ld, rd, ng whereas the telerin allows them in other positions;
  • the telerin allows impossible combinations of consonants in quenya like Br , tr , pl , Cl , or sp and St with the initial one;
  • the telerin preserves groups of sounds modified in quenya, for example ct (become HT in quenya) or ava (become oa in quenya);
  • contrary, the telerin deteriorates other groups preserved in quenya, for example ld tightens to be assimilated in L and the Semi-voyelle S there and W to vocalize in I and U after consonant.

Certain differences are only graphic: in writing romanized, v decides W in telerin against v in quenya, but also exists in quenya, written W . Tolkien generally employed in telerin C for the sound K and the Macron for the long vowels, whereas in quenya K and C get busy indifferently for and the long vowels are more often indicated by the Acute accent.

The Morphosyntaxe of the two languages was to be comparable, nevertheless some differences are known. For example:

  • the telerin used uniformly - I as marks Pluriel (either - R or - I in quenya)
  • the telerin had - io as marks plural Génitif ( - ion in quenya)
  • the telerin more largely employed the Cas Génitif than in quenya and expressed the possession by juxtaposition or suffixation (in addition to these turnings, the quenya had a possessive case in its Déclinaison).

A safety attested in the two languages makes it possible to realize of their degree of distance: to the telerin Ēl sīla lūmena vomentienguo corresponds the quenya Elen síla lúmenna omentielvo “a star shines immediately of our meeting”.
