Teksid is a holding industrial, representing the iron and steel branch of the group FIAT. A long time specilized in the only field of steel and the cast iron, it very quickly will become a major actor in the field of aluminum and special alloys.

History of Teksid

All begin with the recovery from the companies: Piemontesi tool bag, Industry Metallurgiche Torino and Ferriera di Buttigliera Alta (in Avigliana close to Turin), in 1917. FIAT S.p.A. thus makes sure the control of its metallurgical provisioning.

During more than sixty years, with the liking of the economic events Italian but also world, the " Ferriere" , as one called the iron and steel branch of group FIAT, worked, produced and developed without any external intervention, so much so that only the specialists knew the existence of it.

The only criterion which had justified the creation of this branch, its rationalization and its development was the will of FIAT and its founder, the senator Agnelli, of verticaliser the production, therefore all to manufacture is even, even the machine tools, in order not to provide information to competition. ( NDLA: it should not be forgotten that the senator Agnelli was of formation military)

The greatest concern of the leaders of the time was also the safety of the provisioning, very hazardous during this difficult period among two wars.

The situation develops largely as of years 1960/70, the worldwide market of steel changes so much so that the strategy of verticalisation becomes désuette.

Group FIAT detaches the iron and steel branch of its basic activity to make of it an autonomous company open to competition. Thus on January 1st, 1978 is born Teksid S.p.A., which includes/understands four operational divisions: Steel-works, Foundries, Transformation and Equipment. Among its productions, in the catalog the springs, the tubes, the refractory products for industrial uses appear. At the same time and until the end of the years 1980, all the European iron and steel industry is restructured; in Italy it is decided to concentrate under the supervision of Italsider, holding of State, most of the iron and steel activities of the country, to do one of the world majors of them.

In 1982, all the long special steels activities, iron and steel products, the cold rolling of steels inoxidables and standards, will be taken again by the Finsider group, which covers Italsider. Teksid will concentrate from now on with the field of the cast iron, aluminum and the steel components.

In 1985, Teksid declares a turnover of more than 800 billion Liras, with 8.000 paid. Its production is intended for FIAT, its head office in particular with 77% of the total.

At that time, Teksid holds only one company abroad, the FMB in Brazil, which produce in its two factories of Betim, the cast iron and aluminum, intended mainly for the local factories of FIAT. But already as from this year there, Teksid will count among its customers Chrysler and General Motors which will take a great importance gradually.

As of the end of 1986, in order to reinforce its présenca in North America, and to satisfy the increasing demand of its customers, Teksid creates a new local production unit and creates teksid Aluminum Foundry Corp. who will begin the in June 1987 production from heads of aluminum cylinder heads for the new models General Motors-Oldsmobile and shortly after Ford.

In Europe, Teksid continues its development and in 1992 creates Teksid Poland to feed Polish factories FIAT.

In 1994 Teksid repurchases 30% of the capital of Chever Dokum Sanai S.A., whose factory of Smirne in Turkey produces aluminum. Teksid also repurchases the Canadian company Meridian Technologies Inc., specialized in the production of magnesium products.

In 1995, Teksid and the Quimmco Mexican, in order to satisfy the important requests of the US market, decides to build together a new production unit of cast iron with Frontera, for the industrial vehicles. Thus summer created Teksid Hierro of Mexico City. At the end of this same year, a second agreement between Teksid and Quimmco, allows the creation of a new unit of foundry but intended for the aluminum products: Teksid Aluminio of Mexico City.

Teksid repurchases the company Peraro For Srl. of Rovigo (Northern Is of Italy) which becomes Teksid For, specialized in the cast iron products for the heavy vehicles.

At the month of May 1996, Teksid develops in China and sign an agreement for the creation of a joint-venture 50/50 with Yuejin Motor Group, for the local production of products out of grey iron and sféroïdale. It is also in May 1996 that the new Mexican factories of cast iron and aluminum are inaugurated.

In 1997, Teksid creates Nanjing Teksid Aluminum Foundry in China.

In 1998, Teksid Argentina - Foundry aluminum installed in San Agustin, to 70 km of Cordoba, is created in order to supplement the Teksid offer on the Argentinian market.

Nel 1998, Teksid creates a joint-venture with Saic and YMC, two companies Chinese, for the realization, in Zhenjiang, of a cast iron foundry: Dong Teksid Automotive Foundry hooted. Teksid, which decided to be focused on its core business yields, in 1998, all its activities of the sector steel.

In 1999, Teksid signs a recovery importanbte in France with the repurchase of all the activities of Renault in the foundries cast iron and aluminum. Teksid thus takes again 6 French establishments: 2 cast iron foundries and 3d' alluminio located in France plus a cast iron foundry at Portugal. In October 1999, Teksid decides to realize in Sylacauga in Alabama, new works aluminum smelting, which will construct heads of cylinder head and blocks loteurs in loast foam for General Motors.

During the 2nd half of 2000, Teksid yields Teksid For. In the 2nd half of 2002 division Business Alluminio left the group. In March 2007 division Business Magnesio left the group.
