Teide

The Teide is the culminating point of Spain to 3.718 meters, located on the island of Tenerife (archipelago of the the Canaries).

The etymology of the word Teide comes from the word Guanche " echeide" , which meant " enfer". For the aboriginals of Tenerife the environment of the volcano was indeed taboo.

Teide has an age of approximately 500.000 years, like its neighbor, the Pico Viejo (3 134 m), which knew its last eruption in 1706.

The first rise was done in 1582 by Sir Edmund Scory.

In its Voyage in the four principal islands of the seas of Africa , Jean-Baptiste Bory of Saint-Vincent writes in connection with this peak which it calls peak of Ténériffe that it is about “ one of the most beautiful mountains of the world ”.

Today one can reach the top of the volcano thanks to a cable car whose starting point (2 356 m) is established at the edge of the road. One reaches the platform of arrival (3 555 m) in 8 min, most courageous can then climb the slopes with foot to gain the top and to discover a 45 depth m sulfurous crater on 70 m in diameter.
