Tegucigalpa is the Capitale, and the most important city of the Honduras. Its population is estimated in 1997 at: 897000 inhabitants and its inhabitants are called the Tegucigalpais .

Description

The city is located in the valley of the same name, at an altitude of 990 m. Tegucigalpa is also the capital of the Département of Francisco Morazán.

Tegucigalpa was founded at the 16th century; it was then an important mining of Or and money. Industries of the city produce today Textile, Sucre, and Cigarette S.

The towns of Tegucigalpa and Comayagua were in turn the capital of the republic independent of the Honduras, until in 1880, date on which Tegucigalpa became the capital in a permanent way.

The autonomous National university of Honduras was established there in 1847. The National museum has an important collection of parts dating from the period précolombienne. In the Years 1930, the town of Comayagüela, located on other bank of the river Choluteca, was incorporated in Tegucigalpa.

The tropical Cyclone Mitch struck the city in 1998, causing him extensive damage.
