Crumbling
The morning of the October 30th 2006, a mass of 1 million m of rocks was detached from the side of the High Summit and descended the slope until an altitude of approximately: 3000 Mr. the event did not present a danger to the close village of Val of Illiez but of the roads and the paths were closed by security measure. According to the cantonal geologist, the crumbling was caused by the thaw of the rocks, itself supported by the hot summers of the last years.
Origin of the names
The denomination of “Teeth of the South” is recent. The inhabitants called before them “Teeth of Tsallen”. It is only towards the end of the 19th century that the current name was essential. Each tooth had several names during the centuries.
Summit of the East
The Cime of the East was called Mont of Novierre before the middle of the 17th century, then Mont Saint Michel after crumblings in 1635 and 1636 and finally Black Dent (until the 19th century).
The Yellow Tooth
The Yellow Dent was still called the Red Dent in 1879.
Fingers
the finger of Champéry (1882) then the finger of Salanfe (1886) were transformed into Doigts .
The High Summit
the High Summit also had several names: Tooth of the West (1784), Tooth of the South , Tooth of Tsallen and Tooth of Challent .
The Spur
Several ruptures in the solid mass changed the shape of the teeth so that the names adapted according to the geological evolution. It is supposed that the Éperon comprised two tops but that a crumbling with the Middle Ages changed its peak significantly.
