The names of God in Islam are with the number generally admitted by the Ouléma S of eighty ten nine. In addition to its name of Allah, which means God, other names or attributes are used to qualify the divinity venerated by the Moslems and are found quoted in the Coran, the holy book of this Religion. These names are called in Arab rear RTL أسماءاللهالحسنى Asma' Allah Al-Ḥusná, i.e. the better names of God .
Origins and sources of this compilation of attributesAccording to a Hadith: “Certainly, God has ninety names, hundred minus one. Whoever enumerates them will enter to the Paradise; It is the Single one which likes that one enumerates His names one by one. ” (Boukhāri, volume 8, B.12, R.12, Hadith “of the Prophet” of Abū Hurayra). There does not exist list unanimously recognized by the Moslems, because these names were extracted from various passages of the Coran and the Hadith S.
Another hadith, brought back by At-Tirmidhi, quotes ninety attributes, and it is about the list most commonly met. However, the Ouléma S affirm that this list is not allotted to the prophet Mahomet, but with certain rapporteurs of the hadîth. He is generally admitted, at these Ouléma S, that Allah has more than ninety attributes or names of which some are not known. A hadîth speaks thus about names whose Allah reserved knowledge. They say thus that Mafhûm Al-mukhâlafah does not apply to the hadîth of the four twenty nineteen attributes names or attributes, previously quoted. In the direction where to affirm that Allah has ninety attributes names does not have to imply that it does not have of them others.
This list was thus built by the Moslem tradition starting from attributes met in Coran. However, certain terms used in Coran do not form part of this list, like Rabb for example (Lord), while others appear in this list without being met in Coran, like Al Rashīd , for example. They come either from hadith various, or of the oral tradition
