Teatro San Carlo

The Real Teatro di San Carlo , more known under the name of Teatro San Carlo , is the most important theater of the town of Naples and one of most famous in the world.

It is the oldest opera house of Europe, remaining today. Recognized by UNESCO like Inheritance of humanity, it can accommodate three thousand spectators and account five stages of cabins laid out out of horseshoe, plus a vast royal cabin and a long floor of approximately thirty five meters.

History

It was built at the instigation of Carlo I di Borbone on a project of Giovanni Antonio Medrano and was inaugurated on November 4th 1737 with the opera Achille in Sciro of Domenico Sarro (booklet of Pietro Metastasio).

In 1767, Ferdinando Fuga completes renovation works at the time of the marriage of Ferdinando IV and of Maria Carolina and in 1778 it is redrawn by Boccascena.

In 1797, Domenico Chelli carries out a restoration of decorations of the room.

In 1809, Joachim Murat load the architect Tuscan Antonio Niccolini of the project of the new principal frontage which it constructs in neo-classic style .

After a fire which destroys it in the night of the February 13rd 1816, it is rebuilt by the same architect. The new room is inaugurated the January 12th 1817 with the Cantate It sogno di Partenope di Giovanni Simone Mayr, already present at San Carlo with other works of which Medea in Corinto (November 28th 1813). The presence of Mayr, like that of Rossini, is primarily due to the lombard Domenico Barbaja, the largest business manager of Italy and perhaps of Europe.

Of 1815 with 1822, the musical director of the theater is Gioachino Rossini which, at that time, knows one of its most important and prolific seasons. The direction is thereafter assured by Gaetano Donizetti, raises of Mayr.

In 1834, Antonio Niccolini carries out new work of restoration. In 1844-45 Francesco Gavaudan and Pietro Gesuè, with the demolition of the Guardia Vecchia , carry out the Western prospect, towards the Palais Royal.

March 27th, 1969 the sculptural group of the Partenope realized by Niccolini on the pediment of the principal frontage which was exhausted because of the rainwater infiltrations is withdrawn. June 11th, 2007, the Triade della Partenope rebuilt is again set up at the top of the building.
