History

One finds 2 assumptions on the ethymology of the name of Teana : one of Greek origin, the other of Latin origin.

  • In the first, C. Cattini affirmed " Of the Greek “teganos”, “rupes and cautes”, taken for name this village rested by Greek colonists of Antiquity, this being confirmed by the nature of the sols" (rupes: faults; cautes: rocks). The village would thus have been named “Tigana”, term still used nowadays by the local population (" Tigana" has; in local patois).

  • the Latin assumption places the origin of the name of Teana at one more recent time, probably at the time of the Roman Empire. L.Muratori affirmed that Teana came from “Tegia”, place where the hay or the straw is stored, whereas G. Racioppi brought it closer to “theis”, meaning “barn”.
Between Xe and the 11th century, period of domination by the Lombards, Teana was a religious center inhabited by monks Basiliens, and was then named " Castello di Latiano". One then found there 2 Monasteries (San Basilio and San Filippo), which depended on that of Carbone (Italy), like all the Byzantine monastic communities of the neighborhoods. In fact, precisely on a parchment of the Monastery of " S.Elia and S.Anastasio" in Carbone, the name of Teana is mentioned for the first time in 1077. It belonged to the County of Chiaromonte when Guimarca, the seigneure of Teana, married the Count de Chiaromonte. During the reign of Frederic II of Sicily, Teana was pledged with powerful the family of " Sanseverino di Bisignano" , to which it also belonged during the reign of Charles of Anjou (Charles Ier of Sicily) until 1343, when Eufrasia offered it in dowry to Giacomo Missanello, which (as the Sanseverino family) was of Normande origin.

In 1770, after more than 4 centuries of membership of the house of Missanello, the ground of Teana was transmitted like simple Baronnie to Donnaperna.

Between the Lucaniens which supported the Partenopea Republic, it is to be retained the notary Domenico Donadio, who incited the promulgation of the radical law of April 25th, 1799, with which feudality was abolished and were dissolved the religious orders. It is also by this law that Donnaperna were despoiled their grounds, which were redistributed within the country people, but ended up becoming the new inheritance at the origin of the middle-class of Lucanie.

With the creation of the Kingdom of Italy, Teana was integrated into the canton of Chiaromonte.

Remarkable places and monuments

The very beautiful historical center , of moyennageuse structure, is enroché around the castle (it remains little " castello"), from where one can enjoy a superb panoramic sight. In the long and narrow lanes, with dwellings on the first floor, of refined taste although of a country simplicity, one can note various small buildings, among which the building of the barons of the Lecce family.

In Via Domenico Breglia, the gate of the 13th century of the " Chiurazzi" palate; , out of local stone, is a really prestigious artisanal work.

At the entry of Teana, vis-a-vis the new Town hall, one can admire the splendid marble contemporary sculpture of Carrara, realized by a fellow-citizen, celebrates it artist Marino Di Teana. This work was carried out by Marino for " sa" Teana. Francesco Marino, emigrated when he was young man, lived several years in Argentina. Currently, it resides and works in Paris, with short pauses in its native village. It carried out monumental sculptures exposed in the places of European cities E American.

One touve also, with the entry of the village, the " Chiesa Madre" dedicated to Santa Maria LED Dyes with carmine. In the beginning, the vault was in beams with of small gilded squares, then it was increased and covered with frescos of the 18th century representing of the scenes of the life of Christ. Frescos of the 18th century of the Virgin and the Child, the Angel and St Joseph, and the Baptism of St Jean with Little angels, as well as a fabric painted with the oil of the 18th century representing the Annunciation, and a splendid Crucifix out of wooden of the 18th century, just as of very beautiful statues of the 18th century of St François and the Madonna of Dyes with carmine, embellish and enrich the church. In this last work, the unknown artist puts in harmony the depth of space with the form, thanks to the torsion of the bust of the Virgin.

In the historical center, one touve the " Chiesa di San Cristoforo" who should be restored. It contains the fabric painted with the oil (unknown local artist) of the Deposition, St Jean Baptiste, the Jesus Child and St Christoph. The detail of the Deposition is interesting because one observes there a synthesis of ingenuous forms, an exceptional plastic establishment, and imposing volumes of the hands. Draped only one function of graphic ornament does not have, but is used to define the masses. The measurement of the gestures is played alternatively on surfaces breèves or full, recorded by the study of clearly-obscure which covers the vigorous bodies full with energy.

The " Museum of civilization paysanne" deserve a visit, because it henceforth preserves the historical memory of the population of Teana. Among various objects in demonstration, one will note the " mangano" , tool which was used to beat the brooms, which one obtained the wire to weave tablecloths and other objects…
