Teacher-researchers in France

The term refers in general to the university lecturers and with the professors of the universities. These titular teacher-researchers are divided into different body.

In addition, the doctorand S which are monitors also have this double activity, as well as ATER, but are Contractuel S and cannot be established in their station. Lastly, the statute of associated Professor (PAST) allows people exerting in the private sector, and in particular researchers, to have during a few years an activity of teacher in the superior.

Others Enquiring S (enquiring post-doctoral holders, enquiring or Doctorand S not being neither ATER nor monitors) can also carry on an activity of teacher in the superior, and this as Vacataire.

Remuneration, promotion, evaluation and premium

The monthly remuneration of a teacher-researcher French titular depend on the ministry for higher education is made up of a basic salary (tables) to which are added various allowances. The treatment of teacher-researcher evolves/moves during his career by the play of the passage of a class with another, each class including/understanding of the levels. The passage from one class to another takes place with the choice. On the other hand, the advance of level is done, with the seniority safe automatically for the exceptional class of the professors. Seniority premiums can be granted to the university lecturers which engage in a step of mobility. The body of the university lecturers includes/understands a normal class and one except class. The body of the professors of the universities includes/understands one 2nd class, a first class and an exceptional class. The teacher-researchers can also perceive remunerations for complementary lesson exempted in addition to their statutory obligations of services.

There exist four premiums for the research professors depending on the ministry for higher education (table of synthesis):

the premium of research and higher education (decree No 89-775), allotted to all the teacher-researchers in activity in an establishment of higher education. Amount: 1 209,48 € for the academic year 2006-2007.
the premium of doctoral framing and research (decree n° 90-51), granted on ministerial decision, after opinion of a National Commission made up representatives of the research professors, appointed for half on a proposal from the representative trade-union organizations. This one can call upon external rapporteurs. To be able to profit from this premium, the personnel concerned must subscribe the commitment to carry out within their establishment or within the framework of a mission in inter-University matter, in addition to their statutory obligations, an activity specific as regards formation to research and by research during four academic years. Annual amount in 2006-2007: 3 454,49 € for an university lecturer, 4 990,26 € for a professor of the universities of second class, 6 525,86 € for a professor of the universities of first class or exceptional class.
the premium of administrative loads or administration (decree n° 90-50), if the teacher-researcher exerts administrative offices within the establishment (ex: chair, director, scientific director, adviser). Variable amount according to the nature of the exerted functions.
the premium of teaching responsibilities (decree n°99-855), if the teacher-researcher exerts specific teaching functions other than of teaching in the presence of students. Variable amount according to the nature of the exerted functions (of 456 € with 3.530 €).

The personnel of the public corporations of higher education and research depending on the minister of education main road can also receive a remuneration for services rendered at the time of their participation in the research operations scientist envisaged in contracts or conventions (decree n° 85-618)
