Tcherkassy
Tcherkassy is a town of Ukraine on the Dniepr. Its population is of 302.000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the oblast same name.
History
Tcherkassy probably founded with the XIIIe century, is integrated one century later in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It is a fortress, place of refuge for the inhabitants of the steppes, more than one city. The area becomes a starostie, quickly gathering place of the Cosaques which form in the middle of the XVIe century the majority of its population. Tcherkassy is to some extent the capital of the Cossacks of the cities. Downstream from Dniepr already the field of the Zaporogues Cossacks starts.In 1569, the city is integrated into the Polish crown, with the whole of the Ukraine.
