Tbilissi (თბილისი, “ Tbilissi ”, in Géorgien, sometimes known under its old name Tiflis , which means “hot” in relation to the famous sulfurous baths of the city), is the capital of the republic of Georgia, on the river Koura (Mtkvari), in the south-east of the country. The city has a population of 1,345 million inhabitants and a surface of 350 km ².

Tbilissi was founded at the 5th century by the king of Georgia Vakhtang I Gorgasali (452-502). Tbilissi was many occupied times, in particular by the Arab S and the Turkish S. In 1801, it passed under the Russian domination . Of 1918 with 1921, Georgia was independent, and Tbilissi was the capital. In 1921, it became the capital of the federate Soviet socialist Republic of Transcaucasie, and later of the Soviet socialist Republic of Georgia. Since the April 9th 1991, Tbilissi is the capital of the Republic independent of Georgia.

The city shelters the Parliament and the Government of the Republic of Georgia, as well as the principal institutions of the country and of many museums.

Tbilissi is twinned with the towns of Innsbruck, of Nantes, Bristol and Atlanta and Saarbrucken in Germany.

In September 2005, Tbilissi is the first European capital to baptize one of its streets in the name of the president George W. Bush in thanks of her support at the time of the Révolution of the pinks.
