Tazmalt is a commune and Daïra of the Wilaya of Béjaïa in Kabylie (Algérie). In 2000, the population is estimated at it at approximately 35.000 inhabitants.
Built with approximately 270 Meter S of Altitude, the commune is located at 53 Kilomètres in the North-East of Bouira, and at some 85 kilometers in the south-west of the place chief of the department of Béjaia. After Bouira, Tazmalt is to some extent the capital of the valley commonly named kabyle " The Sahel-Djurdjura" , and is thus the most important city.
Its economy rests primarily on the Agriculture, based mainly on the Oléiculture, where one counts innumerable Oliveraie S. the original name is Tazerrajt , which means locally the olive-tree with the large fruits .
During the colonial era, the weekly market (Wednesday), douar Tazmalt, set up in Larbaa Taqdimt, commune of Boudjellil, was moved towards Tazerrajt. A few years later, the market day was changed Wednesday to Thursday.
The colonial Administration has thus creates a small town, in a very strategic place at the edges of the valley of the Sahel.
This market preserved its name reference frame " all the same; Tazmalt" , indicating today, not only one market with national size but also one of the two cities (with Bouira) in full expansion in the valley of the Sahel.
The Industrie is developed very little there, from the absence of zones of activities, in spite of its geographical location. Indeed Tazmalt is in the center of the Kabylie and only 170 kilometers of the capital of the country, Algiers, making of it the city of the wilaya of Béjaia nearest to the capital. However its Marché Hebdomadaire, which attracts many Algerian, takes part largely in the economic acticity of the city.
In spite of the existence of a " house of jeunes" , Tazmalt has a weak infrastructure cultural. The language used is primarily the Kabyle. Leant with the solid mass of the Djurdjura, on the southern slope. The first " families; indigenes" who populated Tazmalt during the colonial era are: Assam, Belbachir, Behloul and Oulebsir. Today, the majority of the inhabitants of Tazmalt result from the villages of close mountains, such as At Mellikec, Igawawen (e.g. Michelet in particular), Imceddalen, Iwaquren, At-Hamdun - Ivehlal-Iqervuziyen, or of the solid masses of At Abbas. Thus, one can affirm that Tazmalt is a standard representation of the various tribes of the population of will djurdjura. There exists also a minority established in the past Arabic-speaking person, estimated at approximately 15% of the total population, this one comes mainly from the areas Arabic-speaking people of the Wilaya S bordering, like Bordj Bou Arréridj and Me sila. However, among this minority, the majority speak today usually the Kabyle.
