Task force 88
Its history
The
Task force 88 is the air and sea force made up of units of the
Royal Navy, the US Navy and other allied navy which operates off Provence in August 1944 within the framework of the Débarquement of Provence. It is dissolved at the end of the operations, on August 29th, 1944.
Its missions
The objective of Task force 88 is to ensure the success of the Débarquement of Provence. For that, it operates like a force Tactique: It must ensure the air superiority on the beaches of the unloading, while supporting the troops on the ground (corrosions of troops, trucks, tanks or trains enemy, bombardments of coastal batteries, bridges…).
