Tarzan is a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912 in the novel Tarzan off the Apes , published for the first time in France at Fayard in 1926 under the title Tarzan in the monkeys (then at Néo (editions)).

The cartoon and the cinema will devote the myth, although in particular for the cinema it is at the price of a treason of the character of origin.

He will be followed of 25 other works.

History of Tarzan

Tarzan is the son of English aristocrats who were unloaded in the African jungle following a mutiny. With died of his parents, Tarzan is collected by a tribe of large monkeys that Burroughs calls the mangani, an unknown species of the science but which shares common characteristics with the Gorille S, the Chimpanzé S and the first Hominidé S, in particular a primitive form of language. In mangani, Tarzan means white skin , but its true name is John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke.

Having had to survive in the jungle since his more tender childhood, Tarzan shows physical capacities higher than those of the athletes of the civilized world. He is also equipped with a higher intellect and he learns English alone by using the picture books which his/her parents had carried. Contrary to the majority of his cinematographic incarnations, the Tarzan of the novels speaks perfect English.

Tarzan meets the human ones for the first time whereas it is adult. He goes then in England but ends by rejecting modern civilization and turning over in the jungle. With the wire of its adventures, he discovers cities forgotten like that of Opar or the worlds lost like that of Stake-ul-gift.

Sources of inspiration: wild children

Tarzan is a variation of the legend of the wild Enfant as well as the Mowgli of the Livre of the jungle of Rudyard Kipling or Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. Its history is based on the theories of the social Darwinisme, science which had its hour of glory at the beginning of the 20th century and inspired also Jack London and Robert E. Howard.

Within the framework of the analytical Psychology, this primitive Man (analytical psychology) is a prototype, among multiple male figures of psyché of the woman. This male share of the woman names the Animus.

The forgotten predecessor: French Saturnin Farandoul

Tarzan is not the first imaginary character to have been high in the jungle. In 1879, the draftsman Albert Robida (1848-1926) signed a novel of 800 pages entitled the " Very-Extraordinary voyages of Saturnin Farandoul" , in which the hero eclipses all those of Jules Verne (it meets them and ridicules them!). The adventure starts with a shipwreck during which Saturnin, 4 months and 7 days old, fails with his cradle on a populated island of monkeys. Adoptee, it will become as nimble as them. At 11 years, conscious of its difference, it leaves its tribe, takes the sea on a trunk of palm tree, then is collected by a ship. He learns quickly, and quickly becomes a leader among the men, but also among the animals. A battle with pirates will make him find his tribe of monkeys of which it will make an armed regiment, informs and civilized, and… always victorious! The following adventures are as incredible as indescribable since Saturnin will go even on Saturn, but it is another history… Saturnin Farandoul is thus, well before Tarzan, high in the jungle authenticates it first character of novel to have been and to have reigned on animals. He was born 33 years before him, he is French, Robida even specifies that he was born in Bordeaux. It is exaggerated to say only when one read the adventures of the French Tarzan, that of its American successor appear quite ordinary. Still is necessary it to be able to find this novel, estimated at 100 specimens preserved in France, and whose unit value is estimated at 350 euros. It is all the same possible to download this work, legally and free, on the site Gallica of the National library of France (http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k1019478).

It is also possible to find film of Marcel Fabre (1914), which recalls these adventures, on a DVD in the work of Jean Demerliac, the Odyssée Jules Verne (Arte - Albin Michel, 2005)

Cartoon

Its adaptations in Cartoon are famous. As of 1929, Harold Foster publishes the first stories and the draftsmen are numerous to take again the adventures of the hero of the jungle or its copies. It is Burne Hogarth which will deliver the best episodes of 1936 to 1980.

Many characters of cartoons are inspired by Tarzan  ; alphabetically, most known sont :

  • Akim, with its unbearable Gorilla and its 2 guenons
  • Ka-Zar (Comic S of Marvel) with Za-Drunk, a Tiger with teeth of saber, (see)
  • Sheena, the queen of the jungle, (see)
  • Yataca, the son of the sun, with his small facetious monkey
  • Zembla with a Kangaroo, a Wildcat, and a awkward Conjurer with the innumerable squabbles
  • Gotlib, which makes many winks with the work of Burne Hogarth, in its famous Heading-with-brac.
