Tartu is a university town of Estonia, in the past named Dorpat . It is the capital of the area of Tartu.

Its currency is: “The city of the good ideas” ( heade mõtete flax ).

Tartu with its population of 101.246 inhabitants (census of 2000) on a surface of 38,8 square kilometers, is the second plus big city of this country. Tartu, which is to 185 km in the south of Tallinn, is also in the center of Estonia of the South. The river Emajõgi, which connects both plus big lakes of Estonia, runs on 10 km inside the limits of the city.

The first hard copy of Tartu goes back to 1030. The University of Tartu, the oldest university of the Baltic States, is founded in 1632.
