Tartas is a common French, located in the department of the Landes and the area Aquitaine.

Geography

Tartas is at the borders of the Grandes Moors and the Chalosse, two very contrasted landscapes. The Midouze, Affluent of the Adour constitutes a kind of natural barrier between these two landscapes: Forest S of pine on a side, landscapes undulating of the other. In north, the High Moor takes shape very quickly while the south and the east lead very quickly to the slopes chalossais. Tartas being divided into two cantons (separated by the midouze), it lies within the scope of a debatable geographical entity: the valley of Adour. One can apprehend Tartas like a town of valley, built according to the local relief of the valley: the precipice of the high city corresponds to the old places to be able (there remains only the church today) and the low city, broader of banks, with the commercial pole.

Gascon linguistics

Its geographical position, allied with the demographic movements related to employment make that the " patois clars" and " neugues " côtoient themselves there, with a prevalence for the latter. Accustomed the " sent" a difference according to the places.

Administration

Demography

After a strong growth after the War of 1939-1945 and in spite of a rather strong industrial fastener with the paper mill and the companies under treating, Tartas loses its place of medium-sized city in the Moors to become a rural district. It is only recently that the demographic balance is become again positive, thanks to a policy of complementarity with the urban communes of Dax and Mount-with-Marsan. The individual habitat on sale develops by the setting batches in allotments equipped. The social habitat follows, can be with an aim of renovating a growing old population. With more than 35% old inhabitants of more than 60 years and a very weak migratory balance, the risk is too great to see Tartas becoming a " town of vieux".

Places and monuments

Tartas is divided into a high city on left bank and a low city on other bank of the Midouze. The high city was formerly the seat of the castle, the administrations and the church, the low city being rather reserved for the trade. Old important Seneschalsy, it remains only bits of a past ostentation: remainders of the fort, a very old street high city, some houses left bank. The banks of Midouze were recently cleaned and give to see the agricultural and natural landscapes Pays of Adour. Today, the town hall is at the low city, all the religious monuments disappeared from the low city and only one church remains dominating the city (Church Jacques Saint) and old the Couvent of the Ursulines (as a preliminary occupied by the Clarisses) which currently shelters the school complex Saint Joseph (of the nursery classes until the end of the college). Presence of old a Cloister, old buildings divided into cells, Rampart S and fortifications, small bell-tower, old Vault. The Hearth of Christian Works is currently owner of this imposing building. The factory of paste Fluff, in the past called the papète or the Calaisian is impossible to circumvent. It is the center of the economic activity and surrtout has among inhabitants a very strong emotional load. Legends or stories are often heard: its mythical origin (Calais) during one period of war give place to heroic local legends. One says capacity to envisage the Météo according to the direction of the smoke of his chimney. The weather is possible to visit this crossbred industrial treasure of country good sense and to know to be technological.

Personalities related to the commune

  • the Chanoine Border, hero of the resistance gave its name to the oldest street of the low city. Vincent and Bernard Navarre marked the economic history of Tartas. At the origin of what will become " Calaisienne" , one finds these two middle-class men of Tartas, at the origin of the major industry of the canton: the industry of the paste fluff (the paper pulp said one then but Tartas forever produced this particular type of paste). A factory, specialized in the recovery of waste of the pulp mill keeps for name their initailes: AVBN (Association Vincent Bernard Navarre, marked avébene or according to other sources, Andre, Vincent Bernard Navarre, this Andre there having extremely succeeded in industry well before the others, and being the father of the establishment of the " Calaisian with Tartas). Guy Delmas, laboratory assistant, but also union representative CGT with the paper mill will be very implied during the workers' struggles carried out against the project of Saint Gobain, owner, who led to the closing of this industry. Delmas could manage this conflict so well that the whole of the population was mobilized.

Certain inhabitants say that Charlemagne drank the water of the fountain currently located at the foot of the old people's home. Others are sure passage of Jeanne d' Albret in a house of the low city (called besides, house Jeanne d' Albret). But that undoubtedly raises more of the Mythe that reality…
