Tartan

The tartan is a wool fabric with squares of colors, typical of the people Celte S.

At the time modern, tartan often represents a Scottish Clan precise. The reason consists of coloured alternate wire bands of wool woven with angle. The blocks of color which result from it repeat vertically and horizontally, forming a reason for squares and lines distinctive, the sett . The Kilt S are almost always decorated with tartans. Tartan is also called plaid in North America, but in Scotland this word indicates a fabric tartan thrown on the shoulder or a cover.

Origins

A possible predecessor dating from the 3rd century was discovered close to the Mur of Antonin. Known under the name of “ sett of Falkirk”, it carries a reason crossed two colors, composed of wools without dyeing, chestnut and white, of the local sheep, the soay sheep . The fabric had been used as stopper of a ground pot containing a treasure of silver coins.
