Tarragone
Tarragone ( Catalan Tarragona in and Castilian) is a common located in the North-East of the Spain, in Catalogne. It is the capital of the Province of Tarragone. In 2005, the city counts: 130670 inhabitants.
History
It is thought that it was founded at the end from III by Aegean people. It was conquered by the Ibères, then by Scipion in -218The Romains named it Tarraco and made of it the capital of the province of Tarraconaise. It was the residence of Auguste, of Galba and Hadrian.
Its Roman archaeological inheritance is remarkable, and is classified with the World heritage of UNESCO: Roman walls, ancient amphitheater, ancient circus, aqueduct, etc
She knew the invasion of the Visigoths in 464, of the Moors in 714. In 859, it is plundered by the Viking S of the chief Hasting, which come from Nantes and had wintered in the Camargue. It becomes Catalan in 1220.
At the 12th century, it becomes the seat of a transitory principality Norman founded by Robert Burdet.
After their expulsion of France ( 1903 ), the Fathers Carthusian monk take refuge in Tarragone, where they take again the production of the Chartreuse. This one keeps its name of origin; the French call it " Tarragone" (green 55° and yellow 43°).
This distilling of Tarragone will remain in activity until 1989. The distilling of Voiron will take again its activity since 1935, with the return of the Carthusian monks in France.
The city shelters today an important port on the Mediterranean.
The memory of the Roman amphitheaters, just as the markets of street and the many temples, evoke two thousand years of history. Beside the ruins of the Roman circuses, the cathedral of Santa Tecla dominates the center of Tarragone.
