Tarnak
The Tarnak is a river of Afghanistan of more or less 320 kilometers length which runs in the provinces of Ghazni, of Zâbol and Kandahar. It is the principal affluent of the Arghandab, therefore a tributary of a tributary of the Helmand.
Geography
The river is born to forty kilometers in south-west the town of Ghazni, and with a score of kilometers in the north of the locality of Mukur. Shortly after its birth, Tarnak adopts the direction of south-west, just like the Arghandab of which it skirts the course, with a score of kilometers more in the east. In its lower course, it changes direction, towards the west, and joined of this fact Arghandab out of left bank, with about fifteen kilometers in the south-west (downstream) of Kandahar. In its lower course, its water is largely used for the irrigation of the oasis of Kandahar.

History
It is possible but noncertain that Tarnak corresponds to the Arachotus of old. Certain specialists think that it would be rather about the Arghandab. The two rivers run in parallel, but Tarnak is shorter (320 km) that Arghandab (400 km) and less abundant.
The ruins of Ulan Robat, supposed to be that of the town of Arachosia , are in its basin. The lake of Ab-e Istada (or Ab-e Istadeh-ye-Moqor), probably corresponds to the lake Arachotus , and is close to the sources of Tarnak, without communicating with him however. It is indeed a endoreic lake located at the north of the area catchment of its affluent the Larah.
The main road
The banks of Tarnak lodge many cultures. The main road built by Soviet in the years 1960, and which connects Kabul to Kandahar passes by there, but one notices few villages. It seems that people live far from the road to avoid the duties of extremely expensive hospitality.
Affluents
-
the Arghastan, enlarged of its affluent the Lorah (or Lora), which joined Tarnak out of left bank little before the Tarnak-Arghandab confluence, with a score of kilometers in the south-west (downstream) of Kandahar.
