Tariq ibn Ziyad (Arab: rear RTL طارقبنزياد (death in 720), or Ibn Ziyâd is a Moslem commander 8th century which led the troops of conquest to the victory during the Conquista. The strait of Gibraltar bears its name today ( Jebel Tariq , mountain of Tariq)

History

Tariq ibn Ziyad is resulting, according to the historian Ibn Khaldoun of the Berber tribe Nefzaoua, in particular of the branch of Oulhaça, established until our days on banks of the Tafna Wadi, in Algérie. After the difficult conquest of the central Maghreb (current Algeria) by the Moslem armies, Tariq, lately rejoined with the Moslems, receives as a present the governorship of the lately conquered city of Tangier.

Tariq is sent by Musa Ben Nusayr, of which he is the lieutenant, at the request of Spanish, wearied oppression of the Visigoths in Ibérie and in the name of the antiques bonds linking the North Africa and the Iberian peninsula, to conquer it in 711 with the head of an army estimated at twelve thousand soldiers Berbères.

It is victorious with the Bataille of Guadalete, of Rodéric, the last king Visigoth of Spain and conquers thereafter, with the assistance of the general Moussa Ben Noussayr who follows it in 712, the near total of the Hispanie wisigothe in three years, except the kingdoms of north, future actors of the Reconquista .

According to a legend, while arriving on the Spanish ground, it makes burn its boats (however this legend is not reported and is not refuted by the Moslems). Tarik says then to its men:

“Oh people! (while addressing itself to the army) Where is the loophole? The sea is behind you and the enemy is in front of you, and you have, by God, only sincerity and patience. ” (Quoted by Al-Maqqari)
