Targa Florio

The Targa Florio is an automobile race which proceeded on the circuit of the Madonies using the roads of Sicily. It was created by Vincenzo Florio , Italian and impassioned patron of car.

The winner received celebrates it trophy of the gold Plate (Italian plaque=Targa) engraved by the artist of reputation Rene Lalique and showing a racing car racing on bottom of sicilian landscape.

The first edition took place on May 6th 1906 in three turns of a loop of approximately 150 km. There were 10 leaving and it is Alessandro Cagno which gained on Itala with the average of 46,8 km/h.

The 2nd edition took place in April 1907 with 50 inscriptions. It is Felice Nazzaro on FIAT which gained with the average of 54 km/h.

After mitigated successes, it became in 1911 the Tour of Sicily in 1  000 km. Initially into only one stage it was divided into 2 stages in 1913: Palermo - Agrigente and Agrigente-Palermo.

Of 1922 with 1924, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz were face to face. From 1925 to 1928 they were the years Bugatti, then a slow decline on a course reduced to the war.

It is in 1951 that Targa found its glare on the traditional course with Mercedes duels, Porsche, Ferrari. In 1955, the race is registered with the official calendar of the Championnat of the World, as well as the 24:00 of Mans or the 1.000  km of Monza. The average of the turn reached 122,5 km/h in 1972.

This race does not form any more part of the tests of the world championship of the marks since 1973. It is not run any more since 1977, date on which the race will be stopped for safety reasons.

With final, during its 3/4 of century of existence, run by more the automobile famous brands, it became one of the legendary races of the automobile competition.
