Tare (mass)

Tare of Arabic ṭarḥ (RTL rear طرح, rejection; subtraction; deduction; defect)

  • mass which one must withdraw from the total mass to know the useful mass; for example mass of the container, mass of the vehicle.
  • defect, manufacturing defect; handicap.

In the field of the Transport, the tare is the Poids with vacuum, or empty weight, of a Véhicule or a Unité of intermodal transport. The total weight of the vehicle is obtained by adding with the tare the Payload (travellers or goods). Generally, in passenger transport, the payload report/ratio/tare is relatively weak, whereas in the goods transport, one often seeks to optimize it to improve the Productivité of transport, especially of weighty products.

Within the framework of the road regulation, the tare weight includes, in addition to the tare itself, the weight of the fluids contained in the tanks (fuel, oil, liquid of cooling) like all the tackles or equipment necessary to maintain the vehicle in functioning order.
