Geography

History and foreseeable history

The hillock of Tardinghen, located at the top of a space of marshy meadows (clogged lagoon) between the courses Gray-Nose and White-nosed monkey, was occupied by a sanctuary already at the time prehistoric, from where its name dedicated to the god germano-Celt Tar, Taran or Thor. Currently, it is surmounted by a small medieval church with a splendid restored table of the XVIIIe century and from where one enjoys a splendid sight on the countryside, the courses and the North Sea.

Contrary to the village close to Audinghen, Tardinghen did not undergo important degradations during the second world war.

On the other hand, its line of shore moved back of approximately three hundred meters since 1945. According to certain geologists (doctors of the university Paris V having worked on the subject since forty years), one can provide that close to an important part of the territory of Tardinghen will have been absorbed by the sea at the latest in 2040. The protective offshore bar, made up of dunes, will then completely have disappeared, of the fact in particular of the drainage of agricultural spaces behind this cord, which involves the alluvia and the sand of the dunes towards the sea and removes natural filling.

Paradoxically, they are the owners of the fields which will disappear, which is at the origin of this drainage.
