Taraz (Тараз), (of 1936 to 1997) Jambyl or Djamboul (Жамбыл), before 1936: Aoulié-ATA (Аулие-Ата), is a city located at the south of the Kazakhstan, at the border vec the Kirghizstan. Population: 330 thousand hab. (1999). Administrative center (oblys of Taraz).

In 751, close to Taraz, on the teritoire of current Kirghizstan took place decisive the Bataille of Catholic students, which signed the division of the territories between the Arabs and the Chinese and brought to the revealing of the trade secret of the paper hitherto jealously kept by the Chinese.
