Tapping

The tapping (“tapotement”, of the English to tap , “to tap”) is a guitaristic technical also used with the low and on others string instruments struck, consisting in typing a cord rather than to scrape it or grip it. It belongs to the wide Techniques of play and there are two principal variantes : the tapping simple, known as “with a hand”, and that carried out with two hands. In the case of the Guitar, the basic technique consists in making use of the hand usually holding the Médiator (qualified “right hand” by convention) to strike - slightly - with its fingers the boxes of the sleeve laid out the touches instrument. The section of the médiator is sometimes used. With the low , in fact also the fingers of the right hand type the cords with this of private individual that the Slap is often used jointly in order to produce sounds percussifs.

The tapping more running made use of the two hands but even that known as “with a hand” always requires the use of the two hands. The difference between the two alternatives lies in the fact that, in the case of the tapping “with a hand”, only the right hand - normally inactive on the handle - comes to type the cords on the touches according to the technique of the tapping . The left hand preserves its usual function. In the case of the tapping with two hands, the two hands realize phrased by typing the cords. In addition, one should not confuse the tapping with a hand, which relates to the right hand , with the Legato , a related technique which mobilizes only the left hand , always on variations of the basic techniques which are the Hammer one and the Sweater-off .

The standard notation of the tapping on the Tablature S is T or t, or sometimes a circle “○” around the notes.

In practice

On a Electric guitar, this technique requires micro goods and a good amplifier to produce a sharp and crystalline sound. It is hardly easy besides with maîtriser : if it makes it possible to obtain a its at the same time extremely fast and fluid, the guitarist should not be satisfied “to tap” on the boxes - he must in makes draw the cord slightly downwards to make distinctly sound the desired note. A fast play in tapping tributary of excellent “is thus touched” and a perfect synchronization between the two hands. The best instrumentalists use their two hands to make tapping with eight fingers, named Touch Guitar   ; the tapping with a hand is also very current.

In Jazz, for example, the Bass player S Michael Manring, Marcus Miller or and especially Victor Wooten were illustrated by their use of this technique. But the tapping is especially present today in the Solo S of guitar of the heavy metal. Largest Soliste S of this musical genre is very often of excellent players of Touch Guitar . In addition to its spectacular aspect, the tapping is indeed one of the most effective techniques to carry out complex sentences at very high-speed. It gave rise to at least an alternative technique, the typed harmonic .

Historical elements

The technique of the tapping was popularized by the Guitariste Eddie Van Halen but it is Steve Hackett which recorded one of the first pieces Rock with a passage in tapping , on behalf of the progressive group Genesis, on the song The Return Of The Giant Hogweed of the album Nursery Cryme. In addition, so of many soloists of years 1980 and 1990 turned into to tapping a mode of expression with typical whole share of the Guitare, this approach existed for a long time. Another similar technique, the selpe , is practiced in the Turkish music folk on the instrument named bağlama. tapping on acoustic instruments as of the banjos are known at the beginning of the 20th century. -->En term of String instrument struck, the Clavichord, an acoustic ancestor of the Piano, is an example among others of use of a mechanism of hammer acting like the finger in the tapping .

For the tapping manual itself, the history starts in the Années 1950. According to Dave Bunker, which manufactured with his/her father the first instrument specifically planned for the tapping with two hands, the “Duet-Lectar” of 1956, the pioneers of the tapping would be Merle Travis and Jimmie Webster. This last made recordings where one can hear passages of tapping to two hands and wrote in 1952 a teaching handbook known under two noms : Touch Method for Electric and Amplified Spanish Guitar or The Illustrated Touch Method . Its professor Harry deArmond, originator of Microphonous S for guitar, had already developed a technique with two hands with an aim of showing the great sensitivity of his microphones. However, the approach of Webster did not have much success.

The techniques of cords struck guitar develop finally in the Années 1970. In August 1969, the guitarist of Jazz Emmett Chapman discovers a new way of doing of the tapping by holding his two hands perpendicular to the handle and in opposed direction, the traditional position today. He also took the initiative to rectify the handle almost vertically, a position which was on the other hand lost. This approach enabled him to develop phrased in counterpoint and carried out it to build a modified guitar with nine cords - six acute and three low registers - specifically planned for this usage : Electric Stick, modified in Chapman Stick. In 1974, it founds Stick Enterprises and starts to sell its instruments to other musicians. The total production reached a little more 5  000 units in 2006.

Randy Resnick is known for its use of the various alternatives of the tapping , in particular in concert and on the recordings between 1969 and 1974, as attests some Lee Ritenour in a number of Guitar Player of 1970. On the album Latest Edition of the group John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, it tries to off reproduce in tapping the Legato of John Coltrane on Sheets Sound . The psychedelic guitarist Harvey Mandel at the origin of several is also phrased early in tapping . Ace Frehley for its part uses the Médiator on the final solo of Shock Me at the time of a concert of 1977.

However, the great names of the tapping intervene later with in figurehead the guitarist Eddie Van Halen. It adapts this technique located in the solo of Heartbreaker played by Jimmy Page at the time of a concert of Led Zeppelin to Los Angeles in 1972. With Eruption , Van Halen made of the tapping one of the principal techniques of its musical speech, opening the way with a whole series of pieces heavy metal of the Years 1980. Within this musical current, it is then especially the approach with a hand which develops, the accent being put on the play at the octave and the pentatonic to carry out very fast solos. With dimensions of Van Halen, the other guitarist having contributed to the explosion of the tapping in the rock'n'roll is Stanley Jordan
