Taouret

Taouret is the goddess Hippopotame of the Egyptian Mythologie.

The name grecized Thouéris comes from the Egyptian “ Your ouret ” and means large the .

It is given to several divinities like epithet (Hathor and Isis in particular) and designates also collectively all the goddesses hippopotamuses.

The modern texts associate Apet to him.

Greek names: Thouéris, Toéris, Thoéris, Toueris.

  • Opet, Apet, Ipet, Apet-Taourt.

In the Egyptian Mythology, it is the goddess with the body of hippopotamus and with the mouth of crocodile, it is drawn up on its back legs of lion and in its front legs, in the shape of human hands it holds the hieroglyphic sign meaning protection. Represented supported on the Ânkh, the hybrid aspect of the goddess symbolizes at the same time the fruitfulness and the ferocity of the mother defending her offspring.

She is the protective goddess of the childbirth. Its representation has two goals. First of all to frighten the bad spirits and to hold them thus far away from the child to be born. Then, after the childbirth, its generous centres ensure a good breast feeding.

The expectant mothers often carried amulets to its effigy to protect itself from the bad fate. The goddess itself is often represented carrying the amulet Its, the symbol of protection.

As protective with the childbirth, it is often associated to the god Bès, of which it shares certain functions.

Taouret is also a symbol of fruitfulness. Indeed, associated with the festival of Opet, it represents the fertility brought by water of the the Nile which fertilizes the ground and allows the culture.

The animal shape of the goddess makes of it, in certain cases, a partner of the god Seth, regarded as incarnated in the male hippopotamus, always malefic.

With Apet, it trains the goddess doubles Apet-Taourt, although it preserves her individuality. The modern texts amalgamate these two entities completely.

A temple is devoted to him to Karnak.

With the Gebel Silsileh, Taouret is represented with a head of woman and full vêture which hides its animal body.
