Taos Amrouche

Marie Louise-Taos Amrouche is a woman of letters French-speaking Algérie and a singer berbérophone, of origin kabyle. It was born the March 4th 1913 with Tunis, and died the April 2nd 1976 with Saint-Michel-the Observatoire in France.

Taos, girl of Fadhma Has Mansour Amrouche and sister of Jean-El Mouhoub Amrouche, is the first Algerian woman novelist, with black Jacinthe , published in 1947. Its literary work, written in a very sharp style, is largely inspired by the oral culture of which it is impregnated, and by its experiment of woman. As a sign of recognition towards his/her mother, Marguerite-Fadhma Has Mansour, which bequeathed so many songs, tales and elements of the oral inheritance to him, it signs Marguerite-Taos the collection “ the magic Grain ”, by uniting with its first name that of the mother.

Parallel to its literary career, she interprets very many songs Berbères, which she holds of her mother. These texts are in addition translated by his/her brother Jean Amrouche. Endowed with an exceptional voice, it occurs in many scenes, as with the Festival of Negro Arts of Dakar in 1966. Only Algeria refuses the honors to him: it is not invited to the Panafrican cultural Festival of Algiers in 1969. It goes there all the same to sing in front of the students of Algiers. Taos Amrouche has work for the Berber culture: it takes part in the foundation of the Berber Académie with Paris in 1966.
