Tanzania Railways Corporation
The Tanzania railways corporation is a government enterprise charged to manage the part of the old network with EAR located on the national territory. The remainder of the Tanzanian network is managed by TAZARA
Origins
The Tanzania railways corporation is created by presidential act of July 27th, 1977 and starting from October 21st, 1977 deals with the 2600 kilometers of line established in metric gauge track. It is placed under the direct responsibility of the Minister for transport. July 23rd, 1988, the Minister for Finance also transfers the old additional activities to him from EAR (road services, hotel services, and ferries on Lake Victoria and Tanganyka)
The network
The central line connects Dar Es Salaam to Kigoma and is supplemented of another line connecting Tanga to Arusha. These two lines are linked by a North-South transversal Korogwe - Morogoro. The principal line includes/understands several junctions, of which one towards the Lake Victoria where the ferries allow a connection with the railroads of the Uganda. At the time of EAR, a junction left the principal line towards north to be connected to the Kenyan network. Connections with the line of TAZARA, with breaking bulk due to the difference in spacing, exist with Dar Es Salaam and Kidatu.

There exist four classes for the travellers:- 1st and 2nd class berths
- 2nd sitted class
- 3rd class
Accidents
The country knew the third worse catastrophe of the African railroads on June 24th, 2002: 281 people died in the train of Igandu.
Privatization
Various procedures of reorganization are committed as from 1990. The hotel services are quickly franknesses with thirds. The services of navigation are privatisés and yielded to the Marine services company limited on June 21st, 1999. The company is more supposed to deal only with the railroad. The Indian consortium Ltd RITES. gained the invitation to tender launched by the commission on the reform of the government enterprises. It must become dealer of the railway services travellers and goods of the country for 25 years as from the month of August 2007.
