Tannhäuser
The École of Louvre is an establishment of higher education in Histoire of art, Archéologie, epigraphy and museology located at Paris, within the Musée of Louvre (Aile of Flora).
History
Founded in the purpose of 1882 so “drawing from the collections, for the instruction of the public, teaching which they contain and training the conservatives, the missionaries and the diggers”, the School of Louvre was initially to teach the Archéologie. However, teaching developed soon worms of other fields of the history of art, and as of 1920 was set up the general history of the art , which constitutes still today the base of the teaching of the establishment. New types of course transfer little by little the day: courses of the evening for the paid people (1921), of the courses of summer (1952), the Course of the town of Paris (1959), of the courses in area (1978). The school was also with the point of progress while creating, as of 1927, a pulpit of Muséographie.
Currently
The school is currently located in the Palate of Louvre (distinct from the museum), in the wing of Flora and has an amphitheater ( amphitheater Rohan ) with the opposite one. It has the one of the richest funds librarians as regards history of art, accessible only to the pupils and the researchers. It publishes also several types of works, like handbooks of history of art, memories, account-returned conferences…Moreover, there exist courses in area (in certain big cities such as for example Marseilles, Roubaix, Dijon…), by three years cycles, reserved to the non-registered students and not delivering a diploma.
Since 2002, Philippe Durey is principal.
Course and duration of the studies
Currently, the school of Louvre exempts a teaching for pupils, but also of the non-registered students, who do not pass from examination.

The course of the pupils breaks up into three cycles respectively of 3,2 and 3 years (license, master, doctorate), each one sanctioned by a diploma.First cycle
During the first cycle, the pupil (“EdLien”) follows a teaching of “general history of art”, holding to cover all the geographical times and surfaces. Thus, in first year studies one:- prehistoric art

These courses in amphitheater are enriched by the “Work directed in front of works” in various Parisian museums like in Versailles, Ecouen, Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer. Of more than other general courses concerning the techniques of creation, the iconography, and the history of the collections are exempted.
In parallel, the pupils of first cycle are held to choose one or two speciality (S) among 32 varied matters, like " archéologies" (prehistoric, Eastern, Greek, Etruscan italic and Roman, of Gaulle…)the architecture and decoration of the large residences, the East, the art of the 19th century, the cinema, photography, arts of Islam, contemporary art, sculpture, French or foreign painting, social anthropology and cultural of Europe… These courses are composed of a lecture, known as “organic”, which is the base even of the speciality, a course of synthesis, and a course of practical works aiming deepening concepts, guiding lines and at going into the details of the organic course. In September 2007 began the course from History of the Mode and the Costume.
Courses of epigraphy, Heraldic, Numismatic and languages, optional, can make it possible to enrich the general course by the pupil.
The diploma delivered at the conclusion of the first cycle is entitled “diploma of first cycle of the School of Louvre”.
Second cycle
Shorter, the second cycle corresponds to the study of museology. In first year, the joint base is composed of several courses: For first half of the year:- Initiation with the mediation and public the
- Initiation with research
- Initiation with the conservation and the restoration of the works of art
- Administration and management of the museums and the inheritance
- Muséographie
- History of art: diachronic subject (in 2006-2007: bronze)
- History of the collections
Moreover, the pupil of second cycle is held to choose dominant, between “Objects” and “Mediation”, and an option, “Right of the market of art” or “Communication in the museums”. The drafting of a monograph of an about sixty pages is required. A diploma, heading “diploma of higher learning of the School of Louvre” is then decreed with the pupil.
The second year makes it possible to look further into the research undertaken at the time of the previous year. Teaching is composed of:
- Methodology
- Seminars of speciality
- Language class
- a two months training course at least.
A report is constant during this second year, which shows obtaining a “diploma of applied research of the School of Louvre”.
Third cycle
This cycle corresponds to the drafting of a report of thorough research written under the control of a professor of the School. Seminars are organized, and a “diploma of thorough research” crowns the end of this cycle and the course at the school of Louvre
Preparatory class with the contests of conservative of the inheritance
In order to prepare the pupils with the contests of conservative of the inheritance, (specialities “museums”, “archeology”, “general inventory” and “historic buildings”), a class was made up. The courses break up into:- lectures
- work directed
- work on table
- languages
Listeners
The listeners attend certain courses (organic courses) with the pupils, but of others are specifically reserved to them (course of general history of art and TDO). They do not pass from examination, but are in general present for their pleasure, in order to enrich their culture. They choose the courses to which they want to assist, not being held by any planning, and some attend the school during several tens of years.Courses of the evening are also proposed, the courses of summer and the courses in areas (more than 25 cities and museums partners).
