The pond of Bouzey is a vast water level of 140 hectares being used as tank with the Canal of the East which runs a little more in north. This water level is in the middle of the department of the the Vosges, on the territory of the communes of Sanchey, Chaumousey, Girancourt and Renauvoid.

History

The annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 pushed France to be a new inland waterway in the East of the country. It will be thing made between 1874 and 1887 with the boring of the Canal of the East. The channel requiring a tank for the operation of the locks, a gravity dam was established on the Avière with the locality of Bouzey on the commune of Chaumousey, intended to retain seven million meter-cubic water.

Catastrophes

The stopping, built on a sandstone porous, yielded twice, the first time in 1884 whereas it was not entirely filled, causing however damage until Nomexy. The second rupture, on April 25th 1895, was a true catastrophe, causing the direct death of 86 people, of 200 people on the whole in particular because of the drinking water shortage in the following weeks in the villages around. It shaved the buildings completely downstream. To note that during the catastrophe of 1895, the tank contained only one third of average current volume.

Nowadays

Currently a study is undertaken to study the ground near the dam because since the earthquake of February 22nd, 2003, part of the dam moved. One sees in particular a difference in a few centimetres between two blocks since this earthquake. That is seen with the naked eye in the middle of the dam…

Activities

Its situation in immediate periphery of Épinal in fact a field primarily dedicated to the nautical activities and of outdoor. A long cycle track of 15km was arranged since the pond to the port of the city of the images.

The tank of Bouzey is also a small paradise for the ornithologists. Fauna remains present there because of large surface of this water level of which the half of the banks are forest. It is also the point of passage of many migrating species. Bouzey is a water level of second category very snuffed of the pike fishermen in the boat using the method known as " with the traîne".
