Tandem

A tandem is a Bicyclette in two places, located one behind the other. Its name, of English origin, is a loan with the Latin tandem , which means “finally”. The word tandem was used in the English student slang to express the idea length.
The students scoffed the Carrosse S at the crested people, harnessed of a double column of horses, one with front, and the other with the back. These horse-drawn became long irraisonnablement. The play of the students would have been then to shout “Tandem! ”, that is to say “Finally! ”, when the last line of horses had passed in front of them. The owner was ridiculed and the frightened horses. “Tandem” then indicated argotiquement these attachments, then progressively indicated a convertible with two horses harnessed out of arrow. However, one can find another explanation in treaties on the horse-drawn attachments: the attachment of two lead horses ( with the Tandem ) would have been popularized by an English rider of the XVIIIe century, Lord Tandem. But the existence of Lord Tandem does not seem not proven. The current direction is attested in 1884. The double attachment left room to double pedals…
The two cyclists pedal at the same rate, because on the majority of the models their respective pedals are connected by a chain assembled on plates of identical size, located side opposed to the transmission chain of their efforts towards the aft wheel. There exist some models which have a free wheel on the level of the pedals, making it possible to desynchronize the pédalage. The cyclist located at the back lays out of more than one fixed handlebar assembled directly on the framework. The effectiveness of the tandem is larger than that of a Vélo: the combined efforts of the two cyclists are braked only by resistance to the air of one of them, and by rolling friction of the two wheels of the machine. This effectiveness is especially sensitive on travelling grounds, in coast, on the other hand, the tandem is less powerful than the traditional bicycle.
Because of the possibility for the cyclist located at the back not to have to be concerned with guidance of the machine, it is frequently used by the blind , which can thus practice the Cyclisme in binomial.
The tandem knew its hour of glory in the Années 1930, when the Paid vacations were founded: it allowed the couples workmen not being able to offer the luxury of a Automobile to walk together on the roads.
The expression to work out of tandem car its origin of the name of the machine, by referring to the effectiveness of the duet of cyclists.
Just as the bicycle, the tandem evolved/moved and diversified according to the uses that one holds for him. Thus, there exist tandems of VTT and tandems lying. In addition, there are versions on which the cyclists are side by side, as well as versions with 3 or 4 places (triplette, quadruplette), even more. There exist also short tandems length of a traditional bicycle and whose second nobody sat in the place of the door baggage and pedals through the wheel late.
